Do you need a producer?

Maybe, maybe not.  The word "Producer" has become an increasingly abstract term over the years, to the point where many artists are unsure of what we do, or why we are needed.  At Man From Nowhere Productions, production is about facilitating creativity.  In some cases it means mostly writing and recording music, in some others it also means organizing schedules and managing budgets.  No two projects are alike, so more often than not I find myself in a hybrid role, taking on whatever the artist needs to help them let loose with their creativity.

This section explains my production process and philosophy in hopes of demystifying the role of a producer, and helping you determine if production services are necessary for your project.

Preproduction

The next phase is preproduction.  We will meet at my rehearsal/project studio, and rehearse the material to be recorded, while recording guide or scratch tracks to review later.  The goal is to be able to hear the material that will be a part of the project beforehand, so we can determine whether changes need to be made, parts need to be written, or if additional musicians need to be hired.  Sadly, this is a part of the process that is often omitted, yet it is this preproduction stage that most often makes the difference between a good record, and a great one.

Post-production (edit/mix/master)

Once we have finished recording in studio, we move to the post-production phase.  Here we work on editing any performance issues (timing, tuning), overdubbing any necessary parts, and mixing the track(s) into premaster form.  After this the project goes off to mastering, in order to furnish you with a final copy for duplication and distribution.
